TINT BOX – What is the difference between showerproof and waterproof?

It is easy to get confused between the claims ‘showerproof’ and ‘waterproof’ but the two terms represent very different capabilities.  A jacket that is declared to be showerproof is in reality only going to keep you dry on a very temporary basis, and in heavy rain conditions, probably only for sufficient time to open up an umbrella!  Showerproof means that the fabric has been treated with a repellent spray that encourages water and dirt to trickle off the material – just like the spray that the shop assistant always tries to sell you when you buy a new pair of shoes.  After about three washes, a ‘showerproof’ jacket will lose its capacity to repel water and you will be left with a regular jacket, with zero ability to protect you from the elements.

A waterproof jacket on the other hand will keep you completely dry.  Even though the outer layer of the jacket may only be showerproof, beyond this the garment will feature a separate technically advanced fabric capable of delivering a 100% waterproof and breathable performance.  Some jackets may not feature the extra layer of technical fabric.  Instead the inside of the outer material is laminated with a tiny perforated coating enabling it to breathe, whilst ensuring the holes are too small to allow the penetration of any water molecules.
